Quick answer

The PS5 takes an M.2 NVMe SSD on PCIe Gen4, from 250GB to 8TB, with a heatsink, and Sony recommends a read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. SATA and PCIe Gen3 drives do not work. Gen5 drives work but run at Gen4 speed. Fitting one does not void the warranty. The table below ranks only new drives on Amazon.co.uk that pass every one of those checks, one row per model, by live price per terabyte.

As of 21 October 2026

PS5 requirements as published in Sony's M.2 SSD support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.

Which SSD capacity for the PS5?

Use case	Best choice	Why
Entry / tight budget	1TB	About 13 big games at an average of 75GB each. See 1TB PS5 SSDs.
Most owners (recommended)	2TB	About 26 big games, and usually the lowest price per terabyte. See 2TB PS5 SSDs.
Large or shared library	4TB	About 53 big games installed at once. See 4TB PS5 SSDs.
Maximum, never delete	8TB	About 106 big games; Sony's ceiling and the dearest per terabyte. See 8TB PS5 SSDs.

How the game counts are worked out

The counts above are capacity divided by an average install of 75GB for a big-budget game, rounded down. Real installs range from under 20GB to over 150GB, so your own number depends on what you play. The PS5 game capacity calculator lets you pick a drive size and see which games fit, using published install sizes from our game size index.

Everything in the table below passes one gate: an M.2 card, PCIe Gen4 or newer, 250GB to 8TB, a stated read speed of 5,500 MB/s or more, new, and not an accessory (Sony's M.2 SSD requirements). Slower Gen4 drives are kept off this page; the full rule set is in PS5 SSD requirements.

Internal SSD or external drive?

Buy an internal M.2 SSD if

You want to install and play more PS5 games at full speed.
You are buying for a big release such as GTA 6: see the GTA 6 storage guide.
You are happy fitting an M.2 drive, a ten-minute job: see how to install a PS5 SSD.

An external USB drive is enough if

You only need a cheap archive for PS5 games.
You mainly play PS4 games, which run from USB directly.
You want the most storage per pound: see external drives for the PS5.

Frequently asked questions

What SSD is compatible with the PS5?

An M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD of 250GB to 8TB, fitted with a heatsink, with a read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended by Sony. SATA SSDs and older PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported. Every drive ranked here passes those checks.

Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?

Yes. Sony requires heat dissipation. Buy a drive with a heatsink already fitted, or add a low-profile M.2 heatsink so the total height stays under 11.25 mm.

What size SSD is best for the PS5?

2TB suits most owners. At an average of about 75GB per big game it holds about 26, against about 13 on 1TB, and it usually has the lowest price per terabyte. The PS5 supports 250GB to 8TB.

Does adding an SSD void the PS5 warranty?

No. Sony designed the M.2 expansion bay for user-installed drives, so fitting one does not void the console warranty, provided you do not damage the console.

Is a Gen5 SSD worth it for the PS5?

No. The PS5 expansion bay runs at PCIe Gen4 speed, so a Gen5 drive runs below its rating with no benefit. A good Gen4 drive is the right choice.
