WD_BLACK SN8100 and PS5 compatibility
SanDisk's Gen5 flagship, also sold as the SanDisk Optimus GX Pro 8100. A retailer lists the heatsink version at 11.3mm, which would be over Sony's 11.25mm ceiling, and we have not been able to confirm the figure against the maker's sheet. The bare version with a slim heatsink is the safer PS5 choice.
Being Gen5 does not help in a console. The PS5 runs the WD_BLACK SN8100 over a Gen4 link, where it performs like a good Gen4 drive rather than at 14,900 MB/s. The premium is justified only by a Gen5 PC elsewhere in its life: is a Gen5 SSD worth it for the PS5.
Will it fit under the PS5 cover?
A heatsink version of the WD_BLACK SN8100 exists, but we have not been able to confirm its height against the 11.25mm limit, so we mark those listings "Check height" rather than "Fits PS5". For reference, Sony's M.2 SSD requirements allow a module up to 11.25mm thick and 25mm wide.
The safe route is the bare version with a low-profile heatsink you choose yourself, as covered in the 11.25mm height guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the WD_BLACK SN8100 in my PS5?
Compatible, but the PS5 runs it at Gen4 speed. Check the height of the heatsink version before buying it for the console. It makes no difference which PS5 you own, since the Slim and Pro have the same M.2 slot.
Does the WD_BLACK SN8100 need a heatsink in a PS5?
Yes. Sony requires a heat dissipation structure. We have not verified the height of this model's own heatsink version, so check it or add a low-profile heatsink that keeps the total under 11.25mm.
