Quick answer

A PS5-compatible SSD is an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 (or Gen5) drive in the 2280 size, with a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, a heatsink, and a capacity from 250GB up to 8TB. SATA SSDs and older PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported and will be rejected. Any drive meeting that spec works in the PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. The live table below lists every compatible drive we track, ranked by price per terabyte.

PS5 SSD compatibility at a glance

	Required	Not supported
Interface	M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 or Gen5	SATA M.2, PCIe Gen3
Size	M.2 2280 (also 2230 to 22110 fit)	U.2, add-in card, 2.5-inch
Read speed	5,500 MB/s or faster	Below 5,500 MB/s
Cooling	Heatsink, under 11.25 mm total	No heat dissipation
Capacity	250GB to 8TB	Above 8TB

What the requirements mean in practice

The most common mistake is buying a SATA M.2 SSD, which looks identical but uses the wrong interface and will not be recognised. Check the listing says NVMe and PCIe Gen4 (or Gen5), not SATA. A Gen3 NVMe drive also falls short of the 5,500 MB/s minimum and is rejected.

Almost all modern Gen4 NVMe drives clear the speed bar comfortably, so once you have confirmed the interface and added a heatsink under 11.25 mm, compatibility is straightforward. Gen5 drives work but run at Gen4 speed in the PS5, so they bring no benefit.

The simplest way to be sure

Pick a drive from the live table below: every entry is already filtered to the PS5 spec, so anything listed will work. Sort by price per terabyte to find the best value, and look for the heatsink badge if you want one ready to fit.

If you are cross-checking a drive you already own, match it against the requirements above; the one to watch is the NVMe-versus-SATA distinction.

Frequently asked questions

What SSD is compatible with the PS5?

An M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 (or Gen5) SSD, 2280 size, with a read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, a heatsink, and a capacity from 250GB to 8TB. SATA and PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported.

Will any M.2 SSD work in the PS5?

No. It must be an NVMe drive on PCIe Gen4 or Gen5. M.2 SATA SSDs use the wrong interface and a Gen3 NVMe drive is too slow, so both are rejected.

Is a SATA SSD compatible with the PS5?

No. The PS5 expansion bay needs an M.2 NVMe drive. A SATA SSD, including an M.2 SATA stick, will not be recognised for expansion.

Does the PS5 support Gen5 SSDs?

Yes, a Gen5 NVMe drive is compatible, but the bay runs it at Gen4 speed, so there is no performance benefit over a good Gen4 drive.

How do I know if my SSD is PS5 compatible?

Confirm it is M.2 NVMe, PCIe Gen4 or Gen5, rated 5,500 MB/s or faster, 250GB to 8TB, and that you can fit a heatsink under 11.25 mm total height. Every drive in the table below already meets this.
