The WD_BLACK P40 is a 2,000 MB/s portable SSD that needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to reach that figure. A PS5 does not have one, so expect around 1,000 MB/s. Over USB a PS5 will store PS5 games for later and run PS4 games on the spot, but it will not run PS5 games. Best value today: Seagate Expansion Desktop at £191.05 (£47.76/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £146.64, for the WD_BLACK P40 500GB Game Drive SSD.

Frequently asked questions
Does the WD_BLACK P40 work with a PS5?
Yes. The console takes the P40 as extended storage at 10Gbps. PS5 titles kept on it still have to be moved to the console or an M.2 SSD before they will start.
What is the best-value option on this page today?
Best value today: Seagate Expansion Desktop at £191.05 (£47.76/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £146.64, for the WD_BLACK P40 500GB Game Drive SSD.
Can I keep my existing files on it?
No. The console has to format the whole drive before using it for games, which removes what was there.
Does a hub affect extended storage?
Yes: it prevents it. The console will only use a drive for extended storage when it is connected directly.
Will a drive from my old PS4 carry over?
Yes. Extended storage set up on a PS4 is recognised by a PS5 as it is, games included.
