SanDisk's Extreme Portable SSD has a 1,050 MB/s rating, the most a PS5's 10Gbps USB port can carry. The Extreme Pro version is a faster 2x2 drive that the PS5 cannot use at full speed. Remember the limit of any USB drive on this console: it holds PS5 games without running them, while PS4 games play straight from it. Best value today: SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2TB at £199.99 (£100.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £142.99, for the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 500GB.

Frequently asked questions
Does the SanDisk Extreme Portable work with a PS5?
Yes. Both the Extreme and the Extreme Pro are accepted as PS5 extended storage. Either stores PS5 games and plays PS4 games, and neither can run a PS5 game.
Which one is the best buy per TB today?
Best value today: SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2TB at £199.99 (£100.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £142.99, for the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 500GB.
Which ports on the console take extended storage?
Any SuperSpeed one. The launch console's front USB-A socket is Hi-Speed only, so pick the USB-C socket or the back of the machine.
What happens to files already on the drive?
They are deleted. Sony's instructions are plain that formatting for extended storage erases all saved data for good.
Does it work if another PS5 formatted it?
It does. There is no need to format again when the drive comes from another PS5 or from a PS4.
