The Crucial X10 claims about 2,100 MB/s, a figure that depends on USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. No PS5 has that port, which leaves the X10 working at about 1,000 MB/s on the console. PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive; they can be stored on one and copied back, and PS4 games play from it directly. Best value today: Crucial X10 8TB External Portable SSD Drive at £819.99 (£102.50/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £218.47, for the Crucial X10 Pro 1TB Portable External SSD.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Crucial X10 work with a PS5?
Yes, at 10Gbps instead of its full 20Gbps. As extended storage the X10 keeps PS5 games off the internal drive and plays PS4 games. It cannot launch a PS5 game.

Can I connect it through a USB hub?

Can I use two USB drives for games at once?
No. Several USB drives can be plugged in, but the console uses only one as extended storage at a time.
It was used on a PS4 before. Do I need to format it again?
No. A drive already used as extended storage on a PS4 or another PS5 does not need to be re-formatted.
