Why the WD_BLACK SN770M falls short
Two tests matter. Interface: the WD_BLACK SN770M is Gen4, so it passes. Speed: it is rated at 5,150 MB/s, and Sony's M.2 SSD requirements recommend 5,500 MB/s or more, so it does not.
It is usable rather than recommended. After its read test the PS5 may warn that the speed is under the recommended figure, and you can continue regardless. We keep drives like this out of the main ranking and list them as "below spec".
Built for handhelds such as the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. The datasheet gives 5,150 MB/s at 1TB and 2TB and 5,000 MB/s at 500GB. It fits the PS5 using the 30mm screw position but is slower than Sony recommends.
A close alternative that passes
Still shopping? The WD_BLACK SN7100 reads at 7,250 MB/s and passes. If the brand does not matter, the cheapest PS5 SSDs and the best value PS5 SSDs rank everything that does.
Already own the WD_BLACK SN770M? Fit it and see. Nothing is at risk, and if loading feels fine to you there is no reason to replace it.
Does the WD_BLACK SN770M need a heatsink?
Sony's limit is 11.25mm total thickness and 25mm width (see Sony's M.2 SSD requirements). The WD_BLACK SN770M ships without a heatsink, so the cooler is yours to add and must keep the stack inside those figures.
Start with the 11.25mm height guide, then pick from standalone PS5 heatsinks.
