Why the Crucial P5 Plus works
On paper there is nothing doubtful about it: Gen4 NVMe, 6,600 MB/s, against a recommendation of 5,500 MB/s in Sony's M.2 SSD requirements. The question gets asked because it is priced like a budget drive, or because an earlier model with a similar name fell short.
An older Gen4 drive with DRAM that Crucial marketed as a PS5 upgrade. Now largely replaced by the T500, so availability varies.
Does the P5 Plus need a heatsink?
Yes. Bought with its heatsink, the Crucial P5 Plus goes into any PS5 model with the cover closing normally. For reference, Sony's M.2 SSD requirements allow a module up to 11.25mm thick and 25mm wide.
If you buy the bare drive instead, add a slim heatsink yourself: Sony does not allow an uncooled M.2 SSD. In the table, the "Fits PS5" tag marks this model's heatsink SKU. Background: the 11.25mm height guide.
More on compatibility
The full rule set is in PS5 SSD requirements and which SSD is compatible with the PS5. If a drive is fitted but missing, see PS5 SSD not detected. Other models are on the PS5 SSD model index, and compatible Crucial drives are on this brand page.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Crucial P5 Plus work in a PS5?
Yes. Works and meets spec. It reads at 6,600 MB/s, above Sony's recommendation, and the heatsink version stays under the 11.25mm limit.
What does the PS5 say when you fit a P5 Plus?
No warning is expected. The console shows a read speed after formatting, and at a rating of 6,600 MB/s this drive should land above the recommended level.
Which similar drive meets Sony's spec?
Nothing has to replace it. The one reason to choose differently is to get a heatsink that is known to fit.
Is the answer different on a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro?
No. All three consoles use the same slot and the same rules, so the verdict carries over, provided the heatsink fits.
