Why the Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 falls short
Two tests matter. Interface: the Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 is Gen4, so it passes. Speed: it is rated at 5,000 MB/s, and Sony's M.2 SSD requirements recommend 5,500 MB/s or more, so it does not.
In practice most games still run from it, and the PS5 shows a read speed figure after formatting so you can see what you got. The risk is with games that stream data aggressively, where a slower drive can mean longer loads. We show these drives in a separate "below spec" section, never in the main ranking.
Not the same drive as the newer Sabrent Rocket 4 (model code SB-RKT4L), which is much faster.
What to buy instead
The like-for-like swap is the Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0, rated at 7,400 MB/s. To shop on price alone among drives that pass, use the cheapest PS5 SSDs or the best value PS5 SSDs.
Already own the Rocket NVMe 4.0? There is no need to bin it. Install it, note the read speed the console reports, and judge by how your games behave.
Cooling the Rocket NVMe 4.0 in a PS5
The Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 is sold bare, with no factory heatsink version. Sony requires a heat dissipation structure, so add a low-profile M.2 heatsink that keeps the total under 11.25mm. Sony's limit is 11.25mm total thickness and 25mm width (see Sony's M.2 SSD requirements).
See standalone PS5 heatsinks for coolers that fit, or the 11.25mm height guide for the rule in full.
Where to go next
To check a different drive, use the PS5 SSD model index or the Sabrent page. The criteria themselves are in PS5 SSD requirements and which SSD is compatible with the PS5, and installation faults are covered in PS5 SSD not detected.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 work in a PS5?
Yes, but below Sony's recommended speed. Works, but below spec. The original 2019 Rocket NVMe 4.0 reads at 5,000 MB/s, under Sony's 5,500 MB/s recommendation.
Does the Rocket NVMe 4.0 trigger the PS5's slow read speed notice?
Expect the notice. It appears after formatting when the measured speed is below the recommended figure, and it does not stop you using the drive.
Which similar drive meets Sony's spec?
The Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0, rated at 7,400 MB/s, is the nearest option that meets Sony's recommendation. Compare live prices on the cheapest PS5 SSD page.
Is the answer different on a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro?
No. All three consoles use the same slot and the same rules, so the verdict carries over, provided the heatsink fits.
