The Samsung T9 is rated at up to 2,000 MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. The PS5 has no 2x2 port, so on the console it runs at roughly half that. Over USB a PS5 will store PS5 games for later and run PS4 games on the spot, but it will not run PS5 games. Best value today: Samsung Portable T9 SSD at £330.00 (£165.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £194.99, for the Samsung Portable T9 SSD.
USB storage rules as published in Sony's extended storage support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.

Source for the console side: Sony's extended storage requirements, which ask for SuperSpeed USB at 5Gbps or faster.
In use
Unless you also use it with a computer that has a 2x2 port, the T9's extra speed over the T7 is wasted on a PS5, so price the two against each other.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Samsung T9 work with a PS5?
Yes, with a caveat on speed. The PS5 accepts the T9 as extended storage, but its 20Gbps mode is unavailable, so it works at the console's 10Gbps.
What costs least per terabyte here today?
Best value today: Samsung Portable T9 SSD at £330.00 (£165.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £194.99, for the Samsung Portable T9 SSD.
Do I have to format it for the PS5?
Yes. Formatting as USB extended storage erases the drive, and that data cannot be recovered.
Can I connect it through a USB hub?
No. Sony's requirements rule out hubs: the drive has to be plugged straight into the console.
Can I use two USB drives for games at once?
No. Several USB drives can be plugged in, but the console uses only one as extended storage at a time.
