Judging a 1TB price

The 98 compatible 1TB drives ranked here are sorted by price per terabyte, which at a single capacity is the same order as price. Across the 98 ranked here, price per terabyte runs from £129.98/TB to £773.67/TB. A 1TB drive holds about 13 big games at an average of 75GB each.

The cheapest drives are usually bare, from smaller brands, and DRAM-less. None of that stops them working in a PS5: the console needs the interface, the size and the speed, all of which are checked here. Add £8 to £12 for a slim heatsink if the drive has none.

Why some cheaper drives are missing

Gen4 drives rated between 4,000 and 5,499 MB/s are cheaper still, and the PS5 accepts them, but they are under Sony's recommended 5,500 MB/s (Sony's M.2 SSD requirements). They appear in the separate "below spec" table at the foot of this page and never in the ranking.
