How to format an SSD on a PS5

A new M.2 SSD is formatted the first time the PS5 starts with it fitted: a formatting guide appears, you confirm, and it is done in seconds. Formatting erases the drive. Afterwards the console shows the drive's measured read speed. A USB drive is formatted from the Storage settings instead.

Formatting an M.2 SSD
Formatting erases everything on the drive.
- Fit the drive with the console unplugged: see how to install a PS5 SSD.
- Reconnect and switch on. The formatting guide appears automatically.
- Select Format M.2 SSD and wait. Do not turn the console off while it runs.
- Note the read speed shown at the end, then choose where new games install under Settings, Storage, Installation Location.
Formatting a USB drive as extended storage
- Connect the drive directly to a SuperSpeed USB port, not through a hub.
- Go to Settings, Storage, USB Extended Storage.
- Select Format as USB Extended Storage and confirm.
