Quick answer

Adding an M.2 SSD to a PS5 Pro is a ten-minute job needing a #1 Phillips screwdriver. The slot is under a side cover, beneath a metal lid held by a single screw. Seat the drive firmly at an angle, fasten it to the spacer, close everything up, and the console offers to format it at the next start. The PS5 Pro already has 2TB built in, so check you need the space first.

PS5 Pro SSD installation

Based on Sony's M.2 SSD requirements, which has the cover diagrams for each model.

  1. Check for a system software update first: Settings, System, System Software.
  2. Shut the PS5 Pro down fully, unplug everything and give it time to cool.
  3. Take off the side cover that sits over the expansion slot, as Sony's PS5 Pro diagram shows.
  4. You will see a long metal lid held by one screw. Remove the screw, then the lid.
  5. The spacer comes fitted for an 80mm drive. For any other length, unscrew it and move it to the matching hole.
  6. Hold the SSD at an angle, match its notch to the connector and slide it home until it stops.
  7. Lower the free end onto the spacer and screw it down, checking the heatsink leaves the screw accessible.
  8. Put the metal lid and the side cover back, plug the cables in and power on.
  9. The Pro shows a formatting guide on start-up. Confirm, and the drive is ready in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Is fitting an SSD to a PS5 Pro hard?

No. It is a short job with one small cross-head screwdriver, and Sony publishes the steps for owners to follow.

Will my existing PS5 SSD work in a PS5 Pro?

Yes. Sony notes that an M.2 SSD formatted in one PS5 can be moved to another without formatting again.

Is the PS5 Pro's slot faster?

No. It is the same PCIe Gen4 slot, so drives perform as they do in other PS5 models.

Can I install the SSD with the PS5 Pro standing upright?

Lay the console flat with the stand removed, as Sony's instructions show, so the drive and screw are easy to handle.
