After formatting an M.2 SSD the PS5 shows a read speed figure. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster, so a result at or above that is good. The console's figure is measured its own way and is usually lower than the number on the box, so do not expect a 7,000 MB/s drive to show 7,000.

Reading the result
| PS5 read speed shown | What it means |
|---|---|
| 5,500 MB/s or more | Meets Sony's recommendation |
| Somewhat under 5,500 MB/s | Accepted; Sony warns games may not perform as from the built-in drive |
| Far lower than the drive's rating | Check the drive is seated and is the model you ordered |
Recommendation from Sony's M.2 SSD requirements.
If the number disappoints
A drive rated well above 5,500 MB/s gives the most margin. Drives rated at 5,000 MB/s or so sit under the line by design: we list those separately as below spec. If the warning appears, see the read speed too slow warning.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I see the PS5 SSD speed?
At the end of formatting. The console displays the measured read speed once.
Can I run the speed test again?
The figure is shown when the drive is formatted. Formatting again erases the drive, so move games off first.
Why is the PS5 figure lower than the box says?
The maker's figure is a best case on a PC benchmark. The console measures differently.
Does a higher number mean faster loading?
Above about 5,500 MB/s the difference in games is small.
