Quick answer

A DRAM cache holds the drive's address map in fast memory. Sony does not require it, and for loading games it makes little difference, but drives with DRAM are the premium models and tend to have higher endurance. Best value today: WD_BLACK SN850P 8TB PS5 SSD at £976.99 (£122.12/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £138.99, for the Kingston KC3000 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. This page lists only models we know to have DRAM.

When DRAM is worth paying for

DRAM helps most with heavy, mixed read and write workloads on a PC. A console mostly reads large files in sequence, which is why DRAM-less drives hold up well in a PS5. Pay for DRAM if the drive may move to a PC later or you simply prefer the premium models.

Frequently asked questions

Does a PS5 SSD need DRAM?

No. Sony's requirements do not mention DRAM. They cover the interface, size, capacity and a recommended read speed.

What is the cheapest PS5 SSD with DRAM?

Best value today: WD_BLACK SN850P 8TB PS5 SSD at £976.99 (£122.12/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £138.99, for the Kingston KC3000 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD.

Do DRAM-less SSDs load PS5 games slower?

Not noticeably. Once a drive clears about 5,500 MB/s, load times are close to identical in the console whether or not it has DRAM.

How do I know if an SSD has DRAM?

Makers rarely put it in the title. We classify by model from published specifications, and each model page on this site states it in the spec sheet.
