Sony caps an M.2 SSD and its heatsink at 11.25mm total thickness: up to 8.0mm above the circuit board, up to 2.45mm below it, and the board itself is 0.8mm (8.0 + 0.8 + 2.45 = 11.25). The module must also be no wider than 25mm with its heatsink (22mm for the bare card) and 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110mm long. The drives ranked below are model-verified, not height-measured: each is the heatsink version of a model whose published dimensions or maker's PS5 statement show it fits.

Sony's size limits for a PS5 M.2 SSD
| Dimension | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Total thickness | Up to 11.25mm | Drive, heatsink and thermal pads together |
| Above the board | Up to 8.0mm | Chips plus the top heatsink |
| The board | 0.8mm | Standard M.2 circuit board thickness |
| Below the board | Up to 2.45mm | Rear chips on a double-sided drive, or a bottom plate |
| Width | Up to 25mm | The M.2 card is 22mm wide; a heatsink may add up to 3mm |
| Length | 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110mm | Form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 |
Figures from Sony's M.2 SSD requirements, checked October 2026. The same limits apply to the PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.
Why the arithmetic matters
The 11.25mm figure is the sum of three parts, and each has its own limit. A heatsink can be under 11.25mm overall and still fail if it puts more than 8.0mm above the board or more than 2.45mm below it. That is why a thick bottom plate on a double-sided drive can be a problem even when the total looks fine.
Width is the limit people forget. The bay allows 25mm, so a heatsink with wide fins or side clips can foul the slot even when it is low enough. Most heatsinks sold for the PS5 are 23 to 25mm wide.
Standalone heatsinks: the 8.0mm rule
| Height the cooler's listing states | How we mark it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 8.0mm or less | Fits PS5 | Inside the 8.0mm Sony allows above the board |
| Over 8.0mm, up to 11.25mm | Check total height with your drive | Under the overall cap, but more than the above-board allowance by itself |
| Over 11.25mm | Too tall | More than the limit for drive and heatsink combined |
| Not stated | No mark | We do not guess a height |
A heatsink you buy separately sits on top of the drive, so the figure that governs it is the 8.0mm above the board, not the 11.25mm total. That 8.0mm also has to hold the drive's own chips and the thermal pad, so a cooler stated at close to 8.0mm is only safe if the figure already includes them. The marks are applied to standalone PS5 heatsinks from the height each listing states in its title or feature list.

Known too tall
| Model or cooler type | Height | Why it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Crucial T705 (heatsink version) | About 20.5mm | Well over the 11.25mm ceiling |
| Corsair MP700 Pro (heatsink version) | Tall PC cooler | Active or finned cooler built for a PC motherboard |
| ADATA Legend 970 (heatsink version) | About 17.9mm | Well over the 11.25mm ceiling |
| MSI Spatium M480 Pro (heatsink version) | About 20.4mm | Well over the 11.25mm ceiling |
| Desktop finned tower coolers | Typically 20mm or more | Built for open PC cases, not a covered bay |
| Heatsinks with a fan | Varies | Need a power lead the PS5 does not provide, and are too tall |
The bare versions of these drives work in a PS5 with a low-profile heatsink added.
PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro
Sony publishes one set of limits for all three consoles. A heatsink that sits at or just over a limit may close on one console and not another because of tolerances, so the safe course is to stay inside the published figures rather than rely on a report that something "just fits".
If you are fitting a bare drive, see standalone PS5 heatsinks. For the wider question of whether you need one at all, see does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink, and for every drive that ships with one, PS5 SSDs with a heatsink.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum height for a PS5 SSD?
11.25mm in total, including the heatsink: up to 8.0mm above the board, 0.8mm for the board, and up to 2.45mm below it. The module can be up to 25mm wide.
How tall can a separate heatsink be for a PS5 SSD?
8.0mm or less to be sure. A heatsink added to a bare drive sits above the circuit board, where Sony allows 8.0mm including the drive's chips and the thermal pad. Between 8.0mm and 11.25mm it depends on your drive, and over 11.25mm it cannot fit.
Why won't my heatsink fit the PS5?
Usually it is too tall or too wide. Desktop M.2 coolers are often 20mm or more, far over the 11.25mm limit, and some have fins wider than the 25mm the bay allows.
Do third-party heatsinks fit the PS5 Slim?
The published limits are the same for the PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. A heatsink inside 11.25mm total and 25mm wide fits all three; one that only just squeezes into one console is not a safe bet for another.
How wide and long can a PS5 SSD be?
Up to 25mm wide with its heatsink (the bare M.2 card is 22mm), and 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110mm long. Nearly all drives sold for the PS5 are the 80mm length, known as 2280.
Which PS5 SSDs are known to fit?
The heatsink versions of Samsung 990 Pro, Samsung 9100 Pro, Samsung 980 Pro, WD_BLACK SN850X, WD_BLACK SN850P, SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P and the other models in the table on this page. They are verified at model level from published dimensions or the maker's PS5 statement, not measured by us.
