Both work. Sony supports single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSDs. A double-sided drive has chips on the underside of the board as well, which is common at 4TB and 8TB. The PS5 allows up to 2.45mm below the board to accommodate them. The only practical difference is choosing a heatsink that suits.
PS5 requirements as published in Sony's M.2 SSD support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.
How they differ
| Single-sided | Double-sided | |
|---|---|---|
| Chips | Top face only | Both faces |
| Common at | Up to 2TB | 4TB and 8TB |
| Below-board thickness | Bare board | Up to about 1.5mm of chips |
| Heatsink | Top plate is enough | Better with a pad underneath as well |
Choosing a heatsink for a double-sided drive
A design that sandwiches the drive cools both faces, but its base must stay within 2.45mm below the board. Check with the heatsink height check. Factory heatsink versions take care of this: see 4TB PS5 SSDs with a heatsink.

Frequently asked questions
Do double-sided SSDs fit in a PS5?
Yes. Sony supports them.
How do I know if an SSD is double-sided?
Makers rarely say in the title. Higher capacities are more likely to be, and reviews or spec sheets confirm it.
Do double-sided SSDs run hotter?
They have more chips to cool, so a heatsink with good contact matters.
Is single-sided better for a PS5?
It is simpler to cool, but both are supported and perform the same.
