Quick answer

If the drive does not appear under Settings, Storage, it is almost always one of three things: it is not fully seated, it is not a supported type (Gen3 or SATA), or it has not been formatted yet. A correctly fitted and formatted drive shows as M.2 SSD Storage beneath Console Storage.

Checks, in order

  1. Confirm the drive is PCIe Gen4 NVMe: see does a PS5 SSD need to be Gen4.
  2. Power off, unplug, and reseat the drive: push it in firmly at an angle, then screw it down.
  3. Check the heatsink is not stopping the drive sitting flat.
  4. Switch on and follow the formatting guide if it appears.
  5. Install any PS5 system software update and try again.

Frequently asked questions

Where should the SSD appear on a PS5?

Settings, Storage, as M.2 SSD Storage below Console Storage.

Why is my new SSD not recognised?

Most often it is a Gen3 or SATA drive, or not pushed fully into the connector.

Could the SSD be faulty?

Possibly. Testing it in a PC, if you can, will tell you.

Does the PS5 need an update to see an SSD?

M.2 support has been in the system software for years, but being up to date is the first step Sony lists.
