Fitting an M.2 SSD is a supported upgrade. Sony designed the expansion slot for owners to use and publishes step-by-step instructions for it. The caveat is ordinary: damage you cause while doing it, such as forcing a drive in at the wrong angle, is your responsibility. The SSD itself is covered by its own maker.

Doing it by the book
Follow Sony's M.2 SSD requirements: update the system software first, power off and unplug, let the console cool, and insert the drive firmly at an angle before screwing it down. Sony warns that continuing with a loosely inserted drive can damage the connector. Our own walkthrough is how to install a PS5 SSD.

Frequently asked questions
Will Sony know I installed an SSD?
It is a supported feature, so there is nothing to hide. The console shows the drive under Storage.
Should I remove the SSD before sending a PS5 for repair?
It is sensible to. It keeps your drive and its contents with you.
Does removing the cover break a warranty seal?
No. The side panels and the expansion slot cover are designed to be removed by the owner.
Does a third-party heatsink affect the warranty?
Sony requires a heatsink and does not specify a brand. Choose one within the size limits.
