How to install an SSD in a PS5 Slim

Installing an M.2 SSD in a PS5 Slim takes about ten minutes and one #1 Phillips screwdriver. Update the system software, power off and unplug, remove the side cover, undo the slot cover, set the spacer for your drive's length, insert the drive at an angle, screw it down and refit everything. The console formats the drive when it next starts.

PS5 Slim SSD installation

Based on Sony's M.2 SSD requirements, which has the cover diagrams for each model.

  1. In Settings, System, System Software, install any update.
  2. Turn the console off, remove all cables and wait for it to cool.
  3. Remove the upper side cover on the side with the slot, following Sony's diagram for the PS5 Slim.
  4. Undo the screw on the rectangular slot cover and lift the cover off.
  5. Remove the spacer screw and move the spacer to the hole matching your drive's length (80 for a 2280 drive).
  6. Line the drive up with the notch and push it in firmly at an angle until fully seated.
  7. Press it flat and fasten it to the spacer with the screw. Make sure the heatsink does not block the screw.
  8. Refit the slot cover and the side cover, reconnect and switch on.
  9. Follow the on-screen guide to format the drive.

What is specific to the PS5 Slim

The Slim's covers come off in separate pieces rather than one large panel. The slot, the spacer positions and the size limits are the same as on the original console. Drives are on the PS5 Slim SSD page.
