The 9100 Pro in a PS5: what to know
Samsung's Gen5 flagship. Samsung's datasheet lists the heatsink models at 80.15 x 25 x 8.88mm for 1TB to 4TB and 11.25mm for 8TB, which sits exactly on Sony's ceiling, so the 8TB heatsink model is the one to double check. Samsung lists PlayStation 5 as a supported use.
The Samsung 9100 Pro is a PCIe Gen5 drive, and the PS5 expansion bay is a Gen4 slot. The drive negotiates down and behaves like a fast Gen4 drive in the console, so its 14,800 MB/s rating is never reached there. It makes sense only if the drive will also live in a Gen5 PC. More in is a Gen5 SSD worth it for the PS5.
Heatsink and fit
The heatsink version of the Samsung 9100 Pro is 8.88mm tall and fits the PS5 expansion bay, on the PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. The bay takes drive and heatsink together up to 11.25mm thick and 25mm wide, per Sony's M.2 SSD requirements.
The bare version works too, but Sony requires a heat dissipation structure, so pair it with a low-profile heatsink. Listings on this page are tagged "Fits PS5" when they are the heatsink version of this model. For more on the rule see the 11.25mm height guide.
