Yes. Sony supports five M.2 lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. A short drive fits by moving the screw spacer in the bay to the hole marked for its length. It must still be PCIe Gen4 and should be 5,500 MB/s or faster, which rules out many short drives made for handhelds. Best value today: Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 Internal SSD 2TB M.2 2230-SNV3SM3/2T0 at £259.58 (£129.79/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £154.94, for the Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 Internal SSD 500GB M.2 2230-SNV3SM3/500G.

Things to watch with short drives
Short heatsinks are rare. Most PS5 heatsinks are made for 2280 drives, so check that one will hold a 30mm or 42mm drive, or use a full-length plate with a thermal pad. Many 2230 drives are also rated under 5,500 MB/s; those are left out of the table below.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Steam Deck SSD in a PS5?
If it is PCIe Gen4, yes: 2230 is a supported length. Many are slower than Sony recommends, so check the read speed.
Do I need a different screw for a 2230 SSD?
No. Move the existing spacer and screw to the 30mm position.
Does a short SSD perform worse?
Length does not set performance. The model's rated speed does.
Do short SSDs need a heatsink in a PS5?
Yes. Sony's requirement for a heat dissipation structure applies to every length.
