The WD_BLACK P10 is a portable hard drive, not an SSD. Its listing gives about 130 MB/s, so it is cheap per terabyte and slow to copy to. Like every USB drive, the console treats it as a shelf for PS5 titles and a working drive for PS4 ones. Cheapest today: Aenllosi Case for WD Black P10 Game Drive Western digital External HDD at £15.99 (£3.20/TB), as of 21 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Does the WD_BLACK P10 work with a PS5?
Yes. A PS5 formats the P10 as extended storage like any other SuperSpeed hard drive. Park PS5 games on it and play PS4 games from it, at hard drive loading times.
What costs least per terabyte here today?
Cheapest today: Aenllosi Case for WD Black P10 Game Drive Western digital External HDD at £15.99 (£3.20/TB), as of 21 October 2026.
Which PS5 USB port should it go in?
It needs a SuperSpeed port, which on the original PS5 means the front USB-C socket or either rear USB-A socket, not the front USB-A one.
How many extended storage drives can a PS5 use?
One at a time. Sony states that two or more USB extended storage drives cannot be connected together.
Can I move it between two PlayStation consoles?
Yes. Sony says a drive formatted as extended storage on a PS4 or a different PS5 can be used without formatting it again.
