A drive without a heatsink suits buyers who already have a compatible cooler, or who can buy a bare drive plus a separate heatsink for less than a bundled model. The performance and compatibility are identical; only the cooling is unbundled.

It is not a way to skip cooling. Sony requires heat dissipation, so you must fit a low-profile M.2 heatsink that keeps the total height under 11.25 mm so the bay cover still closes.

Choosing a heatsink to add
