TBW, terabytes written, is the amount of data a maker warrants an SSD to write over its life. A typical 2TB Gen4 drive is rated between 440 and 2,550 TBW. A console writes when you install or update games, and very little while you play, so most owners will never approach the rating. Treat TBW as a tie-breaker, not a reason to pay much more.

Putting the numbers in context
Writing 440TB means filling a 2TB drive 220 times over. Installing a 100GB game every week for ten years writes about 52TB. The warranty period, usually five years, is the limit most people will meet first.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good TBW for a PS5 SSD?
Any mainstream rating is more than a console will use. Higher is a bonus.
Does QLC wear out faster than TLC?
QLC drives carry lower TBW ratings. For console use even those are ample.
Does playing games wear the SSD?
Very little. Playing is mostly reading; installing and updating do the writing.
Can I see how much my PS5 SSD has written?
Not on the console. The figure can be read by connecting the drive to a PC.
