Add three numbers: the thickness of the drive, the thermal pad and the heatsink. The total must be 11.25mm or less, with no more than 8.0mm above the circuit board and 2.45mm below it, and the whole thing no wider than 25mm. Makers' listings usually give the assembled height; if they do not, measure or choose another.
PS5 requirements as published in Sony's M.2 SSD support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.
A worked example

| Thermal pad | 1.0mm | 3.2mm |
| Heatsink plate | 5.0mm | 8.2mm |
Illustrative figures. This stack is 8.2mm in total and 7.4mm above the board, inside both limits.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my SSD's height?
With callipers across the thickest point including the heatsink, or use the maker's stated dimension.
Does the thermal pad count toward the height?
Yes. Everything between the top of the heatsink and the underside counts.
What if my heatsink is exactly 11.25mm?
That is at the limit. Manufacturing tolerances mean it may or may not close, so choose a lower one if you can.
Is width ever the problem?
Yes. The bay allows 25mm, and some finned heatsinks are wider.
