Quick answer

The PS5 does not update the firmware inside a third-party M.2 SSD. Makers release SSD firmware through their own PC software, so an update means moving the drive to a PC with an M.2 slot or a USB enclosure. Most owners never need to. Keep the console's own system software current, which is a separate thing.

Updating SSD firmware, if you need to

  1. Move your games off the drive or accept re-downloading them.
  2. Fit the drive in a PC or an NVMe USB enclosure the maker's tool supports.
  3. Run the maker's utility and apply the update.
  4. Return the drive to the PS5. If the console asks to format it, the contents are erased.

Frequently asked questions

Does my PS5 SSD need a firmware update?

Usually not. Consider it only if the maker publishes a fix for a fault you are seeing.

Will a firmware update erase my games?

The update itself normally does not, but moving the drive to a PC and back carries that risk. Back up first.

Can a firmware update make an SSD faster in a PS5?

Not beyond its design. It fixes faults.

Does the PS5 system update affect my SSD?

It can add features, as it did when M.2 support itself arrived, but it does not rewrite the drive's firmware.
