Quick answer

A 4TB external SSD holds about 53 big PS5 games in storage at an average of 75GB each. PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive; they can be stored on one and copied back, and PS4 games play from it directly. Cheapest today: Crucial X9 4TB Portable External SSD at £399.99 (£100.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026.

What to expect

At 4TB the price per terabyte of a portable SSD is usually well above a hard drive. If speed of copying matters less than capacity, compare with an external hard drive at the same size.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 4TB external SSD too big for a PS5?

No. Sony allows USB extended storage from 250GB to 8TB.

Which one is the best buy per TB today?

Cheapest today: Crucial X9 4TB Portable External SSD at £399.99 (£100.00/TB), as of 21 October 2026.

Which ports on the console take extended storage?

Any SuperSpeed one. The launch console's front USB-A socket is Hi-Speed only, so pick the USB-C socket or the back of the machine.

Can a hub sit between the drive and the PS5?

No. Plug the cable into the console itself; a drive behind a hub is not accepted.

Is one USB game drive the limit?

Yes. If you need more room than one drive gives, the route is a bigger drive or an internal M.2 SSD.
