Yes. Sony requires a heat dissipation structure such as a heatsink on an M.2 SSD in every PS5 model, the Slim included. The limits are the same too: 11.25mm total thickness and 25mm width. The simplest way to comply is a drive sold with a heatsink that is known to fit.
PS5 requirements as published in Sony's M.2 SSD support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.
Two ways to meet the requirement
| Route | What you buy | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Drive with heatsink fitted | One item: see PS5 Slim SSDs with a heatsink | None |
| Bare drive plus heatsink | Two items: see PS5 Slim heatsinks | About five minutes |
Is the Slim stricter?
Sony publishes one set of limits for all models (Sony's M.2 SSD requirements). A heatsink inside them fits the Slim. One that only just squeezes into another console is not something to rely on.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a PS5 Slim SSD without a heatsink?
Sony requires one. Without it the drive may overheat and slow down.
Does the PS5 Slim come with a heatsink?
No. The console has no heatsink for an added drive.
Will my old PS5 heatsink fit the Slim?
A clamp-on plate within the limits will. A cover-replacement heatsink is shaped for a particular console, so check with its maker.
Which heatsink SSDs are verified to fit?
The heatsink versions of the models listed on the 11.25mm height page, shown in the table below.
