The Seagate Expansion is a plain portable or desktop hard drive. It is not PlayStation-branded, but any USB 3.0 drive of 250GB to 8TB works as PS5 extended storage. PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive; they can be stored on one and copied back, and PS4 games play from it directly. Best value today: Seagate Expansion 22TB External Hard Drive HDD at £731.66 (£33.26/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £91.98, for the Seagate Expansion Portable.
USB storage rules as published in Sony's extended storage support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Seagate Expansion work with a PS5?
Yes, provided the model you buy is 8TB or smaller. Once formatted by the console, an Expansion archives PS5 games and plays PS4 games at hard drive speed.
Which one is the best buy per TB today?
Best value today: Seagate Expansion 22TB External Hard Drive HDD at £731.66 (£33.26/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £91.98, for the Seagate Expansion Portable.
Will it work on a USB hub or dock?
No. Extended storage needs a direct connection, so a hub or dock in between stops it working.
How many extended storage drives can a PS5 use?
One at a time. Sony states that two or more USB extended storage drives cannot be connected together.
Do PS4 downloads have to go to the console first?
No. In storage settings you can send PS4 games straight to the USB drive, where they also run.
