In console use an M.2 SSD should outlast the console's useful life. Wear comes from writing data, and a PS5 writes mainly when installing and updating games. Most drives sold for the PS5 carry a five-year warranty with an endurance rating far above what that workload reaches.
PS5 requirements as published in Sony's M.2 SSD support page. Prices from Amazon.co.uk.
What limits an SSD's life
| Limit | Typical value | Likely to matter on a PS5? |
|---|---|---|
| Rated endurance (TBW) | 440 to 2,550 at 2TB | No |
| Warranty period | 5 years (3 on some budget drives) | It is the practical limit |
| Heat | Managed by a heatsink | Only if run without one |
How to give it an easy life
Fit a heatsink, as Sony requires, and leave some free space rather than keeping the drive completely full. Beyond that there is nothing to maintain. Endurance figures by model are in TBW explained.

All flash has a write limit, but console use is light and rarely reaches it.

Five years on most mainstream models. Each model page on this site states it.
Should I avoid filling the SSD completely?
Leaving some space free is good practice for any SSD.
Does a used SSD have less life left?
It has unknown wear and usually no transferable warranty, which is why we rank new drives by default.
