Why most 2230 drives are not listed
2230 SSDs are made for handheld PCs, and many are rated around 5,000 MB/s, under the 5,500 MB/s in Sony's M.2 SSD requirements. The console accepts those, but we rank only drives at or above the recommended speed, so this list is short by design.
Heatsinks are the other catch. Almost all PS5 heatsinks are 80mm long. On a 30mm drive, use a full-length plate with a thermal pad over the chips, and check the assembled height against 11.25mm.

Frequently asked questions
Do 2230 SSDs work in a PS5?
Yes. 2230 is one of the five lengths Sony supports. The drive must still be PCIe Gen4 or newer.
What is the cheapest 2230 SSD that meets the PS5 spec?
Best value today: Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 Internal SSD 2TB M.2 2230-SNV3SM3/2T0 at £259.58 (£129.79/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £154.94, for the Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 Internal SSD 500GB M.2 2230-SNV3SM3/500G.
Is a 2230 SSD worse than a 2280 in a PS5?
Not because of its length. Many 2230 models are slower by design, which is why speed should be checked on each one.
Why buy a 2230 SSD for a PS5 at all?
Usually because you already own one from a handheld. If you are buying new for the console, a 2280 drive gives more choice and cheaper heatsinks.
