Three internal drives we track are officially PlayStation-licensed: the WD_BLACK SN850P, the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P that has followed it, and the Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe. Licensing means the maker has had the drive and its heatsink tested and certified for the console. It does not make the drive faster. Best value today: WD_BLACK SN850P 8TB PS5 SSD at £976.99 (£122.12/TB), as of 21 October 2026. The lowest price outright is £277.99, for the SANDISK Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD 1TB.

What you are paying for
Certainty and presentation. A licensed drive is guaranteed to fit and to pass the console's checks. An unlicensed drive that meets the same requirements (Sony's M.2 SSD requirements) performs identically. Whether the badge is worth a premium is the subject of SN850X vs SN850P.
