Quick answer

The PS5 Slim takes the same SSD as the original console: an M.2 NVMe Gen4 drive with a heatsink, 5,500 MB/s or faster, up to 8TB. Sony publishes one set of size limits for every model: 11.25mm total thickness and 25mm width. A heatsink that only just squeezes into one console is not a safe bet for another, so stay inside those figures. A low-profile PS5 heatsink is the safe choice.

Same spec, same size limits

Because the expansion standard is identical, any drive that works in an original PS5 works in a Slim, and you can move a drive between them. Install takes about ten minutes and does not void the warranty.

Sony's published limits are identical on the Slim: up to 11.25mm total thickness (8.0mm above the board, 2.45mm below) and up to 25mm wide. Reports of a cooler fitting one console and not another come from heatsinks sitting at or over those limits, where small tolerances decide it. See the 11.25mm height guide and, for how much space the console has to begin with, how much storage the PS5 Slim has.

Choosing a drive for the PS5 Slim

Safe choices for the Slim

A drive sold with a low-profile heatsink designed for the PS5.
An officially licensed model built to the PS5 height envelope.
A bare drive plus a thin flat M.2 plate you have confirmed fits.

Risky on the Slim

Tall finned tower coolers built for desktop PCs.
Generic heatsinks with no stated PS5 height rating.
Double-sided drives with a thick thermal pad on both faces.

Frequently asked questions

What SSD is compatible with the PS5 Slim?

The same as the original PS5: an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with a heatsink, read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, and capacity up to 8TB. SATA and Gen3 drives are not supported.

Do all heatsinks fit the PS5 Slim?

No. Any heatsink must keep the drive within Sony's limits of 11.25mm total thickness and 25mm width, which are the same on the Slim as on the original PS5. Tall PC coolers do not fit. Choose a low-profile PS5 heatsink or a drive sold with one fitted.

Is installing an SSD in the PS5 Slim different?

The steps are nearly identical; only the cover removal differs slightly. The drive requirements and the 11.25 mm height limit are the same.

Can I move a PS5 SSD to a PS5 Slim?

Yes. The expansion spec and size limits are identical, so a drive and heatsink that sit inside Sony's limits in an original PS5 fit a Slim as well.
