Quick answer

The Nintendo Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for game storage. A regular UHS-I microSD card will not run Switch 2 games, so the Express marking is the one spec that matters. The console has 256GB of internal storage and launched on 5 June 2025. Compare by price per gigabyte, shown alongside the outright price.

Why microSD Express is required

The Switch 2 needs the speed of microSD Express (the SD 7.1 standard, which uses a PCIe and NVMe link). Older UHS-I cards, including any from the original Switch, are not fast enough to run Switch 2 games. The console will still read them to copy screenshots and videos across.

Product titles often say "UHS-I compatible" on an Express card. That is not a contradiction: every microSD Express card falls back to UHS-I speed in older devices such as cameras, phones and the original Switch. In a Switch 2 it runs in Express mode. What does not work is the reverse, a UHS-I-only card in a Switch 2.

Express cards are small and pricey, so this page shows both the outright price and the price per gigabyte, letting you compare value honestly across capacities.

UHS-I cards will not work

Do not buy a standard microSD card for Switch 2 games, however cheap. Only a card explicitly marked microSD Express is supported. The table lists only genuine Express cards.

Frequently asked questions

What memory card does the Switch 2 use?

A microSD Express card. Standard UHS-I microSD cards do not work for Switch 2 games; only Express cards have the speed the console requires.

Will my old Switch microSD work in the Switch 2?

Not for games. Older UHS-I cards are not fast enough for Switch 2 titles. You need a microSD Express card.

What size microSD Express should I buy?

256GB or 512GB are the common picks, with 1TB for big libraries. The table shows the sizes actually on sale today. Sort by price per gigabyte to find the best value.

Can the Switch 2 use internal storage instead?

The Switch 2 has internal storage, but it fills quickly with modern downloads, so a microSD Express card is the standard way to expand it. Only Express cards work for games; a UHS-I card cannot substitute.
